Teeth grinding (also known as bruxism), is a common dental condition where a person may grind or clench their teeth involuntarily.

This action can occur during the day, or more commonly during sleep.

Some dental issues that can arise if not addressed, include;

Tooth wear - Grinding our teeth can cause wear to the tooth's enamel over time, leading to sensitivity and increased risk of cavities

Fractured Teeth - Prolonged or intense grinding can cause teeth to crack or fracture

Jaw Pain - Bruxism can strain the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), leading to pain and stiffness.

Headaches - Muscle tension and stress from bruxism can contribute to headaches, especially after waking from a period of sleep.

Sleep Disturbance - Bruxism can disrupt sleep patterns for both the person who is grinding their teeth and the partner.

Your dentist can often diagnose bruxism with a thorough a dental exam. They will look for signs such as worn tooth enamel, tooth sensitivity, overactive masseter (jaw muscle) or damage to dental restorations.

Treatment options may include:

Night splint or mouthguard - Custom-made dental appliances can protect your teeth against grinding during sleep.

Medications - In some cases, medication may be recommended.

Stress management - Stress and anxiety are common triggers of bruxism, so managing these factors can sometimes reduce teeth-grinding

Regular dental check-ups are crucial for monitoring the effects of bruxism on teeth and gums. Dentists can offer advice on lifestyle changes and treatments to prevent further damage and alleviate symptoms associated with teeth grinding.
